You have no energy. You’re overweight. You get sick more than you want to or maybe you have chronic health problems. You have headaches and indigestion. You don’t feel good and you want a change.

First of all before we begin this article, let me address a popular criticism:
“There’s chemicals and poison in everything so there’s no point in even trying.”
Listen up Captain Defeatist, you sound like a child who doesn’t want to take a shower and says, “Why should I shower, when I’m just going to get dirty again?”
Does it take some…work? *shudders* Yes it does, but it’s not as hard as you think it is. Taking the first step is the hardest part, but after you learn a few basic facts you will be feeling better and will have cut out a lot of junk very quickly. You can do this!
The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to just start with cutting out one thing. Don’t try to do it all at once because that is when you will become overwhelmed and want to give up. Start with one thing or one group at a time.
Reasons to Make the Switch to Organic
I want to explain to you what I mean by “cut out the junk” and I am going to do that by showing you the level of toxic poison that is bombarding you from all directions. You have lied to yourself for too long by saying, “Yeah, I know what I eat is bad, but lots of people do the same thing and get by okay.”
First of all, you do not realize the severity of HOW BAD it is what you are eating and exposing your body to.
Second, lots of people are doing the same thing and they ARE NOT doing okay. They are getting sick and dying at far greater numbers than you realize. Just look at the top 10 causes of death in America:
– Heart disease – about 610,000 people die every year (over 730,000 have a heart attack every year)
– Cancer (malignant neoplasms) – over 580,000 people die every year (about 1.6 million diagnosed every year)
– Chronic lower respiratory disease – almost 150,000 people die every year
– Accidents (unintentional injuries) – over 130,000 people die from falling, car crashes, and drug overdoses
– Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases) – almost 130,000 people die every year (800,000 have strokes)
– Alzheimer’s disease – almost 85,000 people die every year (over 5 million have Alzheimer’s)
– Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) – about 75,000 people die every year (about 1.5 million diagnosed each year)
– Influenza and pneumonia – almost 57,000 people die every year
– Kidney disease (nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis) – about 47,000 people die every year
– Suicide (intentional self-harm). – about 41,000 people die every year
So EIGHT of the top causes of death in America have to do with some type of disease. Not plane crashes, terrorist attacks, or mass shootings, but diseases of the body. If you think what you eat and put on your body has nothing to do with these diseases like heart disease and stroke, you are deceiving yourself and/or have been lied to. That shows you another reason to go organic: to try and avoid going to the doctor or hospital as much as you can.
This should be a no brainer right? You would think so, yet at least 1 in 4 people eat some type of fast food every day, 8 out of 10 Americans eat fast food at least once a month, and Americans spend 10% of their disposable income on fast food every year. Looks like there are still a lot of people who don’t understand how awful fast food is for you.
Eating fast food doubles your chance of developing insulin resistance which heightens risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Fast food causes cardiovascular problems like high blood pressure, strokes, and even affecting kidney function because of the high sodium(refined salt) content. Fast food contains large amounts of trans fats and calories which causes weight gain and obesity. Fast food is high in bad cholesterol(LDL) which builds up plaque in your arteries further heightening the risk of heart attack and stroke. Fast food contains little to no vitamins and minerals which obviously your body needs to function correctly; this is also why it’s not satisfying and you want to eat more. Fast food has very little fiber which clogs your bowels and constipation is the cause of a lot of disease in Americans.
In addition to that, fast food is filled with harmful additives, preservatives, and chemicals that you cannot just exercise out of your body like MSG, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, GMO’s, and dimethylpolysiloxane(an anti-foaming agent used in silly putty).
If you were going to cut one thing out, fast food should go first. What’s more worth it in the end? Convenience and low price now? or disease, thousands of dollars in hospital bills, and early death later?
Processed Food a.k.a. “Junk Food”
It doesn’t matter if you are talking chips, cereal, cookies, candy bars, soda, and other “snacks”; they are all filled with ingredients dangerous to your health. Junk food also makes you FAT FAT FAT because it stimulates the reward centers in your brain so intensely that you overeat. The stimulation of the neurotransmitter dopamine in your brain caused by junk food makes it highly addictive. Oreos were found to be just as addictive as cocaine and morphine!
Let’s look at some of the most common dangerous ingredients in processed junk food that are making you sick and fat.
Artificial sweeteners are found in A LOT of products. Some of the main products you probably consume on a regular basis which contain artificial sweeteners are: soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, coffee, (fake)juice, chewing gum, ketchup, maple syrup, and many more.
What sweeteners are we talking about here and what are the dangers?
High Fructose Corn Syrup
There are some pretty big disinformation campaigns going on out there about HFCS which try to say that it is “natural” and “no different than cane sugar”, but that is just a bunch of garbage. The reality is it is a major cause of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, dementia, liver failure, tooth decay, and more. You read that right, HFCS is a major cause of the obesity epidemic(contrary to what you see on TV). HFCS often contains toxic levels of mercury(which is toxic to the brain). HFCS is made from GMO corn which further compounds the negative health effects. There are many other negative health effects caused by ingesting HFCS.
Also please note that the industry has tried changing the name of HFCS to simply “fructose”. Do not be fooled.
Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that has deceived and damaged the health of many thousands of people. Aspartame is most often found in products that claim to be “sugar free” or diet(i.e. diet soda). Many people mistakenly thought they were getting healthier by lowering their sugar and calorie intake by consuming these products, when in reality they were damaging their health by ingesting a toxic poison. When aspartame enters the body it breaks down into three substances: aspartic acid(excess aspartate becomes an excitotoxin, it “excites” or stimulates the neural cells to death causing serious chronic neurological disorders ), methanol(aka wood alcohol which breaks down into formaldehyde – a deadly neurotoxin that wreaks havoc on sensitive proteins and DNA), and phenylalanine(high levels in the brain and blood can lead to emotional disorders and depression). Aspartame also stimulates your appetite, promotes fat storage, and increases your carb cravings(so much for trying to lose weight with aspartame and diet soda!) Over 10,000 complaints have been filed to the FDA concerning aspartame’s side effects and there are 92 documented side effects including migraines, dizziness, heart palpitations, and seizures!
Avoid ALL artificial sweeteners including acesulfame potassium, Neotame, and others.
Refined Sugar (White Sugar)
This substance is often added to coffee and occurs in many processed snacks. Refined sugar has been stripped of anything beneficial to your health. It also leaches vitamins and minerals out of your body like calcium. Sugar is a major factor in tooth decay because sugar feeds the bacteria that causes plaque and that produces acids that attack your teeth, which eventually results in breaking down the hard enamel on the surface of your teeth. Sugar in a person’s diet contributes to obesity. Removal of sugar from diets has cured symptoms of diseases such as diabetes, cancer and heart illnesses.
There are other artificial sweeteners out there which I also would not recommend. Healthy alternatives would be raw organic honey and pure maple syrup, just try not to use too much. Get your sugar from natural sources like fruit which contains fiber because this will prevent the spikes in blood sugar associated with artificial sweeteners.
The first thing to cut out of this category is soda, both diet and regular.
Hydrogenated oils are found in a very large portion of products. These oils are found in margarine, salad dressing, peanut butter, ice cream, shortening(which is in cakes, cookies, and crackers),nondairy coffee creamer, frozen pizza, popcorn, potato, corn and tortilla chips. Any fried food you eat you can bet is soaked in hydrogenated oil like french fries, fried chicken, and doughnuts.
What is hydrogenated oil?
It is a process whereby companies add hydrogen to vegetable oils. Hydrogenation gas is fused into the oils using a metal catalyst, aluminum, cobalt, and nickel (toxic metals to the body). The oils are changed on a molecular level and change the essential fatty acid in the oil into what is known as trans fat (dangerous to your health).
The main reason oils are hydrogenated is that the hydrogenation of the oils act as a preservative. This leads to increased shelf life of products and less returns or spoilage of products.
Studies show that these deadly oils cause type II diabetes, coronary heart disease, breast cancer, other types of cancers and auto immune diseases. Also, trans fat lowers the lipoprotein (HDL) the good cholesterol and raises the lipoprotein LDL which is the bad cholesterol. Build up of plaque in the arteries results in atherosclerosis and plaque is partially made from bad cholesterol.
Food labels can say that there is zero trans fat in a product even if it contains up to 1/2 a gram of trans fat PER SERVING. So if you consume a products with 6 servings at 0.5 grams a serving you are actually consuming 3 grams of trans fat while thinking you are consuming zero!
Since the public outcry against trans fat has been so great, the FDA recently ordered all companies within 3 years to stop the use of partially-hydrogenated oils. Fully hydrogenated oils contain no trans fat so it is viewed as healthier, but that is simply not true. First of all, fully hydrogenated oil cannot be used for the same products because it turns solid. It needs to be mixed with other oils (made from GMOs) that are not healthy. In addition to that, fully hydrogenated oil still contains toxic metals like aluminum and it is heated to a high temperature creating a cancer causing substance called acrylamide.
To counter act the public outcry against trans fat and hydrogenated oils, companies began seeking alternatives. Interesterified fats are one example, which are actually proving to be WORSE than trans fat! Foods with ingredients like “stearic rich” or “high stearate” are just other names for interesterified fats. Hydrogenated oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil can also hide this ingredient as well.
Yet another strategy companies have come up with to avoid the lockdown on trans fat is using mono and diglycerides. These ingredients are a byproduct of vegetable oil processing and contain trans fat, yet they are not required to be labeled as containing trans fat as long as it doesn’t come from triglycerides! Mono and diglycerides act as such a “good” preservative that a video came out showing how an ice cream sandwich from Wal-Mart didn’t melt after sitting outside on an 80 degree day for over an hour!
They are pulling a bait and switch and Americans still face the same if not worse health risks from these ingredients.
Artificial colors are added to processed food because the end result of the product usually looks gross. Artificial flavors, nutrients, preservatives, and other additives are also put into these processed foods to make these fake food concoctions actually appetizing.
Artificial dyes are put into cereals, candy, soft drinks, and other processed foods to give them bright rainbow colors that are appealing to children especially. In other cases, they are simply added to mask the gross or boring color of the processed food like cheese puffs and other snacks.
These artificial colors are not safe for your health as evidenced by many studies. In fact, many food dyes have already been banned in the past such as Orange #1(children got sick after eating Halloween candy), Red #2(suspected of being carcinogenic), and Yellow #1, 2, 3, and 4.
That does not mean currently used artificial colors are any safer, especially when you consider their history. A report called Food Dyes: A Rainbow of Risks was done showing that many artificial colors cause various types of cancer(i.e. brain tumors) as well as hyperactivity in children.
If your food looks like a wild color not found in nature, it’s a good idea to avoid it. The best way to be safe is to check the ingredients for artificial food dyes.
MSG (Monosodium Glutamate)
You may have already heard about MSG. You probably have heard that it’s in Chinese food and that it’s not healthy for you, but you may not be aware of actually how dangerous it is.
MSG is a flavor enhancer added to many different kinds of foods like soups, instant rice and noodles, frozen food, and most snacks you would call “munchies”. MSG is made of about 78 percent free glutamic acid, 21 percent sodium, and up to 1 percent contaminants.
MSG is an excitotoxin which overexcites the cells to the point of damage or death. This damages the brain and potentially even triggers or worsens learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease and more. It also causes damage to your heart and other organs because the free glutamic acid overstimulates glutamate receptors in the body. Other dangers of MSG include obesity and disruption of the endocrine system.
Not everyone is sensitive to MSG right away. For many people, sensitivity to MSG builds up in their bodies over time until they reach a threshold of sensitivity.
Of course food manufacturers had to do something to counteract the awareness of consumers to the dangers of MSG. In order for food manufacturers to continue to use MSG undetected, the FDA allows a loophole for processed foods to be marked “no added MSG,” or “contains no MSG,” even though they still contain glutamate, the chemical in MSG. On top of that, the food companies started using other names to mask the fact that their products contain MSG like yeast extract, hydrolyzed protein, autolyzed yeast, etc.
MSG is just another one of the many dangers of eating processed food.
Refined Table Salt (Sodium Chloride)
The issue of salt intake is confusing for many because they hear conflicting reports from doctors and the media. The most important thing to establish is what do I mean by salt? I say ‘what do I mean by salt’ because you hear in the media all the time that salt is bad and that you should have a “low-sodium” diet, which has created a market for all these “low-sodium” products. The problem is, yet again, we have word games being played by food manufacturers resulting in more health dangers for consumers.
The difference between refined and real salt
Salt in its natural state is good for you and has been consumed by humans for thousands of years with no problems. In fact, salt used to be very valuable, so much so that Roman soldiers were paid in salt. The problem we run into is when salt is processed by heating it up to 1200 degrees causing it to lose over 60 beneficial trace minerals which are naturally occurring. Refined salt is reduced to only two elements: sodium and chlorine, while natural sea salt or Himalayan salt contains beneficial minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, sulfur, and iron. So the reason salt has been connected to hypertension is not because salt is bad, it is the deficiency in minerals in table salt that is bad.
The danger of refined table salt not only comes from its lack of essential minerals, but also from dangerous anti-caking agents which are added to it like sodium aluminosilicate(this contains aluminum, which attacks the brain and has been linked over and over to Alzheimer’s disease) and sodium ferrocyanide(listed as hazardous to health in it’s MSDS).
Another danger of table salt is dextrose. Dextrose is added to iodized salt as a stabilizer to prevent potassium iodide from oxidizing and evaporating. Dextrose is basically an industry term for glucose. Dextrose is refined from corn starch which is most often from GMO corn. Dextrose, like other simple sugars, can cause spikes in insulin and blood sugar. It is another ingredient you don’t need in your salt.
What about iodized salt?
The last warning about table salt I would give is about iodized salt. Iodine is a necessary nutrient, so what could be the big deal? I will write a much more lengthy article on iodine another time, but for now here are a few facts.
Iodine was originally added to salt because certain areas of the country had soil that was deficient in iodine which in turn affected the iodine content of food. The amount that was added was only enough to prevent goiter(the swelling of the thyroid), but not enough for the needs of other parts of the body. The salt is iodized with potassium iodide which may be helpful to the thyroid, but the breasts and ovaries need iodine as well as iodide.
In addition to that, salt is a poor food product to fortify because chloride, which is a halogen, competes with the iodine for the same receptors, making it less effective. Other factors that contribute to iodine deficiency in the body are halogens like bromide, fluoride, and perchlorate. These all compete for the same thyroid receptors and also impair the function of the thyroid.
Iodized salt is only 10 percent “bioavailable,” meaning the body only uses 10 percent of iodide consumed. Iodine used to be added to bread as a dough conditioner and it was a lot more bioavailable in that form. Unfortunately, bread companies took iodine(iodate) out of bread and replaced it with bromide in the form of potassium bromate which only compounded the problem further.
Another issue is by the time the iodized salt reaches the grocery store, half of the iodine in the sealed container has evaporated into the air. After you bring the iodized salt home and you open it, even more escapes. Iodine in salt is unstable so it takes between 20 and 40 days for an opened container of iodized salt to lose half of its iodine.
The average RDV for iodine is 150 micrograms, which I believe is too low. We are as a nation definitely deficient in iodine and I would recommend you read the following books for more information: The Iodine Crisis and Iodine: Why You Need It
The bottom line with salt is that refined table salt is junk and you should avoid it at all costs. Americans ingest 80% of their salt through processed foods, which should be avoided anyway, and this is where most of the refined junk salt is getting into the diet. The other danger of processed foods are flavor enhancers. Flavor enhancers are added to make foods taste salty, even though they do not contain the sodium our bodies need. This creates another situation where you will overeat leading to obesity.
Is a low sodium diet actually healthy?
Low-salt diets are actually bad for your health when you are ingesting good salt like Pink Himalayan instead of refined. The fear of salt has caused many health problems. A low salt diet actually increases insulin resistance, increases risk of heart failure, and cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, your body needs at least 1 teaspoon a day of unrefined salt for important functions of the body like carrying nutrients into and out of your cells, maintaining and regulating blood pressure, and helping your brain communicate with your muscles.
Change that salt from white to pink and you will be feeling much better.

Refined Carbohydrates (White Flour)
This topic is controversial and complicated. With the popularity of books such as Wheat Belly and Grain Brain and the explosion of the gluten free movement; there has been a full scale war against wheat and anything made with it. I believe this section will help you to unravel all the information about this subject and cut through the confusion so that you can clearly see the dangers and benefits of wheat, whatever form it may take.
First, we must cover refined grains. Refined flour, or refined carbohydrates, present one of the clearest dangers to your health. This process of refining grains has had one of the biggest impacts on damaging our health.
What is refined flour?
A whole grain consists of three parts: the bran, the germ, and the endosperm. The refining process gets rid of the bran and the germ so that the endosperm can be ground up into white flour. This is great for the manufacturers who sell white flour and the products made from it because it allows the products to have a long shelf life without spoiling. The problem is that most all of the nutrients your body needs are found in the bran and the germ.
When you include the bran and the germ, whole grain flour is full of important nutrients. One cup of whole grain flour contains a significant portion of your daily value of the B-complex vitamins, Omega-3 fatty acids, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, zinc, selenium, and a big dose of manganese. It also contains 16 grams of protein, over 14 grams of fiber – which helps to eliminate constipation and protect against blood-sugar/insulin spikes because it digests more slowly, and it contains soluble fiber, which is a prebiotic(it stimulates the growth of probiotics – healthy gut bacteria).
So the big dangers of refined flour are the removal of half to two-thirds of these nutrients, the removal of about a quarter of the protein, and the removal of the fiber.The removal of the fiber causes constipation. Constipation leads to a wide variety of disease and problems, including diverticulosis.
What about enriched flour?
When grains were first starting to be refined and sold on a mass scale, there were large increases in vitamin deficiency diseases like pellagra(lack of vitamin B3) and beriberi(lack of vitamin B1). To solve this problem, manufacturers began to “enrich” the flour with the needed vitamins. That is what “enriched flour” means.
Enriched flour is definitely not nutritionally equivalent to whole grain wheat flour. First of all, the vitamins that are put into the flour to “enrich” it are isolated synthetic vitamins that your body doesn’t even recognize as vitamins. Vitamins are part of a biochemical complex and you can’t just take one part of a vitamin, isolate it, stuff it in some processed food, and expect the body to recognize and utilize it. Secondly, out of the over a dozen nutrients that are reduced through the refining of flour, only five are added back in AND at levels way out of proportion than they were originally. Enriched flour is not healthy for you contrary to what the food manufacturers try to sell to you as truth.
Also, the body requires B-vitamins to digest carbohydrates. Whole grains have a good supply of B-vitamins naturally occurring within them. Since refined flour is depleted of B-vitamins, the body will deplete itself of B-vitamins by using what is already in the body.
How about bleached flour?
Then there is bleached flour. Flour is bleached in order to make the flour look more white and also produce an “aged” effect which enhances the baking qualities of the flour. The problem is that most manufacturers use chlorine gas to bleach the flour and a byproduct of this process is alloxan. Alloxan is something that is given to rats and mice in order to give them diabetes so that doctors can study treatments for diabetes! This creates yet another danger for eating refined flour.
In addition to the refining, bleaching, and enriching processes, another danger of white flour is the toxic mix of preservatives and other ingredients that are added to make it taste good. A lot of bread made with this refined flour contains high fructose corn syrup, GMO soybean oil, mono and diglycerides, bromine(bromate), and a host of other poisonous ingredients.
Diabetes and weight gain
The last danger of refined flour we will talk about is how your body recognizes the flour as a simple carbohydrate or sugar. This is because of the removal of the bran and the germ. What is left is the endosperm which is mostly starch and your body processes this as sugar. When you consume any white flour products your blood sugar will spike high. After this your pancreas will produce insulin to bring the blood sugar level back down. Eventually the insulin receptors will get sick of the sugar spikes and you will experience insulin resistance which leads to diabetes.
Insulin resistance means that when your body produces insulin to bring blood sugar down, the insulin starts to not be able to bring the blood sugar down anymore. If the flour still had the bran in it which contains most of the fiber, it would help to slow digestion of the flour and in turn slow the spike of blood sugar.
The insulin spikes also cause you get fat. The hormone insulin causes excess calories from carbohydrates to be stored as fat in the body. Read more about that here.
Is wheat better than white?
Be careful also of being deceived by false advertising on flour products. Manufacturers know that a lot of people have caught onto the fact that white bread and white flour products are bad for you, so they throw the word “wheat” on the package or in the ingredients. This is deceptive. You need to read the ingredients of the product and if it does not say “whole grain wheat flour” as the first ingredient, it is not made from whole grain wheat. Some names that are used to fool you are wheat flour, enriched wheat flour, bread flour, all purpose flour, and some companies will even say “contains whole grains” on the front, but it’s only a small percentage mixed together with a bunch of other junk.
The dangers of refined and white flour are clear. Products like pizza, bagels, pastries, pasta, bread, cereal, etc. are the main source of this flour and form a big part of the average American diet. If you start to cut out products made with refined flour, you will notice a big improvement in your health.

Conventional Animal Products
There are quite a few problems and dangers with conventional animal products that come from factory farms. These meat, dairy, and egg products are used in fast food and these are the products you buy at the average grocery store. Let’s look at the major health dangers.
There are 6 types of steroidal hormones approved by the FDA for use on beef cattle. These hormones stimulate more growth to produce more meat. Dairy cattle are given the hormone rBGH to stimulate more milk production(which results in blisters on the udders which pop and the puss goes in the milk). These “estrogenic” hormones mimic the hormone estrogen, which in turn can have potential negative effects on human health.
Humans are exposed to synthetic hormones when they eat the meat of livestock treated with these chemicals. The hormones are also excreted in the urine of livestock, and can contaminate water supplies for humans and wildlife.
While all animals produce estrogen, the effect of additional estrogen is affecting humans. Studies show a “feminizing effect” on males. Males exposed to environmental estrogens can show lowered sperm counts and abnormal sexual development. Environmental estrogens may also cause females to enter sexual maturity earlier than normal, and a potential increased risk of breast cancer. This growing body of evidence has prompted the European Union to ban growth promoting hormones and all imports that were produced with them. Hormones are also endocrine disrupters which can cause birth defects and tumors.
(This brings us to a sub-category: SOY. Soy is in a lot of products and you must briefly read about the dangers which includes hormones. Soy is high in phytoestrogens which mimic estrogen in our bodies. Too much estrogen in the body is a leading cause of breast cancer, infertility, and low libido. An infant taking the recommended amount of soy formula is consuming a hormone load equivalent of 4 birth control pills a day! This is one of the reasons we’ve seen such a dramatic rise in puberty at an early age with young girls starting their periods at 6 and 7. Soy also destroys your thyroid by preventing it from getting enough iodine. This will cause you to gain weight, be fatigued, along with many other issues. Soy contains trypsin inhibitors which causes digestive problems. Lastly, over 90% of soy is genetically modified. So keep away from products with soy in them like soy lecithin which is commonly found in chocolate bars, soy protein isolate(in many workout bars and supplements), cereals, and crackers which contain soy. )
Because of the disgusting conditions and close proximity of the high concentration of animals in a small space, they are given antibiotics to fight off disease. The animals are also given these antibiotics to stimulate growth. Did you know that 80 percent of antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used on livestock?! This is causing the outbreak of antibiotic resistant bacteria(superbugs) which endangers the health of thousands. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the antibiotic fluoroquinone in chickens, fluoroquinone-resistant bacteria began showing up in humans. Consuming antibiotic tainted meat also kills gut flora(good bacteria) which contributes to obesity and a higher susceptibility to disease.
There are other differences between conventional and organic animal products as well: Organic eggs have higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamins A, and Vitamin E. Organic eggs are also free of arsenic. Organic chickens are cage-free which means they can actually move around and are not treated cruelly by being stuck in a small battery cage where they can’t do anything; this equals healthier chickens which produce healthier eggs.
Conventional pork products have a lot of problems. They are contaminated with disease causing bacteria like E. coli, staph, and Salmonella. Pigs used for conventional pork products are not only given antibiotics, which have their own dangers, but are also given a drug called ractopamine to speed growth. Because this drug ractopamine has not been studied well at all pertaining to it’s effects on humans(except for a study with 6 people which turned up negative health effects), the pork from pigs given ractopamine is banned in 160 countries outside the U.S.!
In addition to that, many processed meat products, which often contain pork products, contain the harmful preservative sodium nitrate. I mean products like sausage, bacon, pepperoni, cold cuts, beef jerky, and hot dogs. Sodium nitrate turns into sodium nitrite in the body and then in your stomach into harmful chemicals called nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are also formed when processed meat is cooked at high temps through the combining of naturally occurring amines in the meat and sodium nitrite. Nitrosamines have been studied and shown to cause pancreatic, stomach, and colon cancer; in addition to that they damage your DNA, cause migraines, and other negative side effects. Sodium nitrate is in most fertilizers so you can find it in a lot of conventional produce as well. The way to avoid this is to buy organic produce and also make sure you consume plenty of Vitamin C from natural sources like citrus fruit because the Vitamin C blocks the formation of nitrosamines.
Just in case all that wasn’t enough to convince you, take a look at this article and video about meat glue. It’s an enzyme made from the blood plasma of pigs and cows and it’s used to glue together scraps of meat making them look like a solid cut of meat like a steak! It increases your chance of food poisoning and is yet another reason to avoid conventional meat.
There has been a debate raging about whether organic produce is better for you or not. If you will Google this discussion you will find many mainstream sources trying to convince you that organic produce is not any healthier for you than conventional.
The reality is that big corporations who make chemical pesticides, fertilizers, and genetically modified seeds spend millions of dollars every year to not only lobby Congress, the EPA, and FDA, but also to wage an information war where “reputable” sources extol all the great virtues of conventional food while bashing organic food.
You need to cut through all this garbage and see the truth. You know ingesting these chemicals is not safe or natural and mankind has been better off for thousands of years before all the modern day problems of chronic illness like cancer and pollution came into existence. (I am not referring to contagious disease epidemics like typhoid fever and cholera. Those who often try to say there were more disease problems in the past never focus on the main causes which were lack of plumbing and sanitation, but that is for another article.)
The United States uses about 1.1 billion pounds of pesticide a year. Most conventional crops are sprayed with an abundance of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. The most commonly used type of pesticides are organophosphates. Organophosphates, even occurring in low levels in food, have been linked to delayed brain development in children, Parkinson’s Disease, and lymphoma(cancer) among other detrimental health effects. Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s herbicide RoundUp, is very harmful and linked to birth defects, miscarriages, cancer, and disrupting the endocrine system(hormones). Pesticides have also been shown to be linked to bee colony failure which has a wide range of negative impacts on our planet.
The fertilizer industry pulls in $172 BILLION a year worldwide. This means there are efforts made to keep you from knowing the dangerous effects artificial fertilizer has on your health and the environment just like other poisonous and profitable industries. Because of corruption and loopholes in laws created to protect pollution-producing industries, sewage treatment agencies, waste management companies, and the $60 billion-a-year fertilizer industry; these industries are protected from federal hazardous waste disposal laws.
“What this means is that any material containing elements beneficial to plant growth, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, chromium, manganese, copper, calcium, boron or sulfur, can be labeled and used as a fertilizer, regardless of its other contents. Industrial and mining wastes — including plutonium, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, lead, PCBs and dioxin — are taken from tailings, sumps, holding ponds, furnaces, and even captured from pollution control devices, and legally sold to fertilizer companies or spread directly on farmland. Sewage sludge, which may contain dangerous levels of pathogens, as well as PCBs, chlorinated pesticides, asbestos, industrial solvents, petroleum products, radioactive material and heavy metals, can also be sold to home gardeners and farmers as fertilizer, and spread on public lands such as golf courses, parks and playgrounds.” quote from here
Because of this situation, these industries can save and even MAKE money selling their hazardous waste as fertilizer.
Most people think that synthetic fertilizers help poor quality soil by adding nutrients to them. However, synthetic fertilizers only replace nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus while at the same time depleting the other nutrients and minerals that are normally found in healthy soils. This nutrient deficient soil creates nutritionally depleted food.
Synthetic fertilizers also kill microorganisms that exist in the soil which are beneficial to crops. These bacteria would normally break down organic matter into plant nutrients, and help convert nitrogen from the air into a plant-usable form. This contributes to further nutritionally depleted food.
The destruction of the good bacteria also affects the structure of the soil. The soil loses its essential ability to retain water, air, and nutrients. Plants grown in such depleted soil are extremely susceptible to damage from diseases, insects, and drought.
Vitamin C content decreases in crops as the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers increase.
You can clearly taste the difference between organic and conventional produce and the difference comes from the nutrient depleted soil which conventional crops are grown in.
Finally, we must talk about the disease fertilizer causes in humans and not just fertilizer used on farms, but even fertilizer you put on your yard. Children who live in homes that use pesticides and/or synthetic fertilizers on their lawn have over six times a greater rate of leukemia. People that work at golf courses have been shown to have higher rates of brain, intestinal, and prostate cancer; usually over twice the rate as the general population. People that live within 2600 feet of an agricultural area have increased risk of brain cancer. An astounding 6.7 fold increased risk was found for the brain cancer type known as astrocytoma for people living within 2600 feet from an agriculture area!
GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms)
The first question is: what percentage of crops are GMO?
– 88% of corn is GMO – this is used in tons of processed foods, high fructose corn syrup, and 36% is fed to livestock which you eat (about 40% is used for ethanol)
– 93% of soy is GMO – this is used for hydrogenated oils, (soy)lecithin, emulsifiers, tocopherol (a vitamin E supplement) and proteins which you find in processed foods
– 94% of cottonseed is GMO – Cottonseeds are culled from cotton, and then used for vegetable oil, margarine or shortening production, or frying foods, such as potato chips.
– 90% of canola is GMO – this is used mostly to make canola oil which can be found in many products as a hydrogenated oil processed with hexane
– 90% of sugar beets are GMO – 54% of sugar in the U.S. comes from sugar beets
What are GMOs?
GMOs are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering). The process involves taking the DNA of one species of plant or animal and forcing it into the DNA of another species. This is known as transgenesis and therefore the technically correct name for GMOs is transgenic organisms. Laughably GMO proponents will try to say this process is no different from natural breeding that has been going on for thousands of years. What’s hilarious about this is the fact that companies like Monsanto have to prove that their process of creating their seeds is significantly different from natural breeding in order to get a patent on their seeds!
The reason biotech companies use transgenesis is to create a species of plant(or animal) that has a desired trait which was not there before. For instance, GMO RoundUp Ready Soybeans were genetically engineered to be resistant to the chemical herbicide: glyphosate. Glyphosate is the chemical mentioned earlier in this article with harmful health effects(this herbicide was created by Monsanto, the corporation that gave us such wonderful poisonous chemicals as DDT and Agent Orange) Glyphosate is so “safe” that a lobbyist from Monsanto said you could drink a quart of it and be fine, yet when offered some to drink he declined saying, “I’m not an idiot.” watch here
All the weeds are killed by glyphosate while the GMO soybeans are left intact. The problem is that the GMO plants absorb the herbicide from the soil causing dangerous health effects when consumed. Some GMO plants are actually engineered to produce an insecticide of their own so that when a pest tries to eat the plant it dies. Seems legit and totally safe to eat…
Another problem with this is that bugs are actually developing resistance to these GMO plants, so farmers are having to turn to more pesticides.
A farmer has to pay royalties in order to grow genetically modified corn, as the technique is regarded as an intellectual property. Yes, you got that right: CORPORATIONS HAVE PATENTED SEEDS. If farmers save the GMO seeds for next year and replant them, they will be sued. Even if GMO seeds blow in the farmer’s non-GMO field and Monsanto’s seed police discover it, the farmer will be facing a lawsuit!
Who can you trust?
Since it is extremely difficult for independent researchers to study GMO seeds due to the fact that they need permission from the corporations that manufacture them; research proving the dangers of GMO’s is very controversial and difficult. Corporations like Monsanto spend millions of dollars every year to have lobbyists in Washington D.C. influence legislators and regulatory agencies like the FDA and EPA. In addition to this, members of the FDA have formerly worked for Monsanto causing further conflict of interest.
Then you have internet shills, who write articles defending GMO’s and attack supporters of organic food, who in many instances also turn out to have ties to the biotech industry. There are also many studies that have come out that are completely biased and purposely misleading which are funded by these biotech giants. You will find supposedly “independent” scientists and researchers have received compensation, usually indirectly, from these GMO companies.This massive disinformation campaign makes it difficult for many to know who to trust. Considering the conflicts of interest and lack of transparency from these biotech corporations previously mentioned, you should be extremely skeptical of any research claiming to prove the safety of GMO’s.

So what are the health dangers of GMOs?
Biotech companies say that modified genes don’t survive in the body due to being broken up in the intestinal tract, yet a Norwegian study proved that genes can pass through the intestinal wall into the blood.
Bt corn is engineered to produce it’s own insecticide as it grows which kills insects that try to eat it. So we are supposed to believe corn that will kill bugs poses no threat to humans who consume it??
Studies have revealed various negative health affects from eating GMO foods. GMO corn was linked to hormonal disruption, infertility, disruption of the intestinal immune system, cancerous tumors, liver congestion, and kidney deficiencies. Monsanto did a 90 day study on rats that determined GM food was safe(Wow, what a surprise…), but the French Seralini study which was conducted over 2 years revealed that tumors didn’t start to develop until after 4-7 months into the study. This shows that low level environmental toxins take longer to have an impact than the length of studies being conducted by GMO supporters.
(The Seralini study was later retracted by the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology after they received worldwide pressure to do so. This does NOT mean the study was wrong at all. There were a number of factors that caused them to retract the study, one of which is conflict of interest. Read this article which gives a great explanation as to why the study was unjustifiably retracted and also the reasons all other studies showing the health dangers of GMOs are attacked. This explains a contributing factor to the brutal reality of this statistic: Americans have the highest rate of cancer of any other country on the planet — 1 out of 2 men, and 1 out of 3 women are expected to get cancer in their lifetime.
These facts show very plainly that there is a big difference between organic and conventional produce.
I hope this article has convinced you of the dire need to change your eating habits. What matters most is quality of life, not quantity of life. Just because you live to be 90 years old doesn’t mean you are healthy. You can end your life in a mess of drugs and surgery with very little energy and clarity of thought or you can live life to the fullest to the very end. The choice is yours.
